Beer Pairings

Beer is one of the world's oldest prepared beverages, possibly dating back to the early 9500 BC, when cereal was first farmed, and is recorded in the written history of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. Archaeologists speculate that beer was instrumental in the formation of civilizations as people settled in one place to cultivate cereal grains, such as barley and wheat, for the purpose of making bread and beer for nourishment.
Beer and food pairing offer phenomenal combinations to be enjoyed. Our culture thinks of wine first as the accompaniment to food. Properly paired wine must be a complement to the flavors of food. Beer has the advantage of complementing and balancing the flavors of food.

Generally you can pair light dishes with light beer and heavy dishes with heavy beer.

Ideal Beer and Food Pairings
Light Body

  • Dark Lager. Wonderful for sandwiches (ham, corned beef, pastrami, BLTs) and beef stew
  • Pilsner. The beer's bitterness is good for stimulating the appetite, and is a tasty match with spicy Asian food, fried chicken, french fries, and potato chips
  • Wheat Beer. Light soups and salads, vegetarian dishes, sushi, feta and goat cheese, sweet and fruity Asian dishes, citrus-flavored dishes, including dessert and salad dressings

Medium Body

  • Pale Ale. Try a hoppy pale ale with spicy Mexican foods and sausage, and grilled salmon
  • Amber Ale. Wonderful with something from the grill, Asian foods, or Caribbean food
  • Brown Ale. Enjoy full-bodied brown ales with hamburgers, steaks, and sausages

The above ales also pair well with Cheddar, Parmesan, or Romano cheeses.
Heavy Body

  • Porter. Delightful match with smoked foods, barbecue, sausage, rich stews, chili, and “surprise!” …. bittersweet chocolate
  • Stout. Classic match with oysters on the half shell, roasted and smoked foods, barbecued and grilled foods, salty foods, braised dishes, chocolate and desserts
